These are the 'ones that got away'. I have a theory that many of the best artists were very good at 'editing' away their worst works and just keeping the best ones for public display...

Here are some of my painting disasters. Don't laugh!
This painting was too big (about 24 x 20 inches). I should have painted it about half that size. Actually it looks quite good when reduced to web pages sizes, but up close, the real thing looks patchy

I worked on this painting (a mix of Gouache and watercolour) for weeks - and it shows! I've overworked it and the main colour masses are too fragmented and mosaic-like. Next time I'll simplify the colour areas. On the plus side, I'm happy with the colours themselves (my original inspiration for the wintery scene). Less is definitely more when it comes to painting.
This one fails on two counts: Firstly, not having a main interest and secondly, not having a wide enough tonal range. The lack of a main interest could be remedied by including a figure but figures are hard to paint convincingly into a landscape at this late stage. The second problem, a lack of tonal range means that the painting looks washed out. There are no real darks or highlights to make the colours 'sing out'.
